Debian part 2

So, I think I like this. Since I'm using ubuntu on the desktop (at least in the places I use a linux desktop, which no, is not everywhere) debian on the backend is working out for me. I'm playing around with some stuff that I think is rather cool (irssi scripting and the like). Those of you who know me well, know I spend a lot of time on irc, so I'm hoping to make something useful of all this. I think I have some ideas for irssi scripting that could make for some very interesting stuff.

Debian

So about a week ago I moved my irssi VPS from centos to debian. Funny stuff, because some things that just didn't work before are now. Specifically my cell phone (a windows mobile 6 device from which I use pocketty) now renders irssi properly when I ssh in and attach screen. This NEVER worked correctly for me before, multi-line messages would overwrite other messages and not scroll right. I don't know where the breakage was, but it works now and I'm very happy about it.

I'm rather preferring apt-get over yum too, for the most part. Aptitude rocks for a text only box.

Backups backups everywhere.

So I've been here a while, and a large part of my day is just trying to get things to make sense (to me). I'm working through backups a little bit at a time, and I'm mostly happy with them, but I'm frustrated by the lack of certain ways of doing things.

I'd love to see some sort of product that backed up, by default, to something you could easily restore and boot in a VM environment. You can sort of do this with acronis, since it's pretty quick at restoring, but it's not perfect.

Rack n Stack

So, I had my first stab at installing an HP rackmount box yesterday. The box was a DL360 G5
I can sum it up in 2 words. It sucked.

The server was ok and accessible for the most part. I had to install a raid adapter, and this required removing some thumbscrews (This is a lie, I had to use a screwdriver to break them open). The rails were the real hassle, though. I hated them!

New Job

Well, it seems I've finally found a new job. I'll be starting next week, and it should be an awesome opportunity. More updates to follow!

Who Am I?

Welcome to my site. Yes, it's a goofy name, but I'm a bit of a goofy person. So let me summarize who I am and what I do briefly.
I am:
* A single father of two amazing boys.
* The family Geek (I love those calls asking how to forward an email.)
* A systems/storage engineer with over 5 years of IT experience.
* That guy who can't go anywhere without his laptop (Really, though, I just superglued it to my arm!)
* A freenode staffer. (Since I am a useless coder this makes me feel a bit better about using stuff other people made for free.)

Welcome

The purpose of this site is to further my pursuit of some of the things I enjoy...
