Mailing List Spammers

Yesterday I received some spam. Just another day on the internet, right? Well, this spam was special.
In my FOSS community efforts over the past few months, I've found myself signed up to quite a few LUG mailing lists all over the place. It wasn't until someone else on this particular list commented that I realized the significance of this spam. The message was sent on behalf of http://www.rackwire.com/, a hosting provider in NY. Whats rather depressing here is that they sent it to the individual addresses grabbed from this LUG mailing list... many of which were unique to the mailing list. It seems everyone on the ML received it simultaneously.
Perhaps it didn't occur to a HOSTING company that sending spam in this manner to a bunch of geeks was a bad idea, but it left a bad taste in the mouths of many on the list and I'm sure it didn't do much good for rackwire. Fail.

--Update--

Rackwire responded to my email about this matter, they say the list was given to them by someone (not many details on in what form) by someone who thought this LUG would be interested in the company. It's obvious they could have handled this a little better, at least by asking the LUG list folks first or even better by asking if they could do a product demo at a LUG meeting. Rackwire, if you're listening, take note :)
