Rack n Stack
So, I had my first stab at installing an HP rackmount box yesterday. The box was a DL360 G5
I can sum it up in 2 words. It sucked.
The server was ok and accessible for the most part. I had to install a raid adapter, and this required removing some thumbscrews (This is a lie, I had to use a screwdriver to break them open). The rails were the real hassle, though. I hated them!
Once I got them in, we couldn't get the box to slide in (our fault, really, the equipment above was old and stuck down a tad too far). Removing the rails was something like solving a logic puzzle. I had to stick a network switch sideways in the open U space to move the above equipment up enough to actually get the rail out. Finally I got them, moved them down, and got the durn thing racked.
All this is in the past, the included media had my arrays up quickly, and the OS installing shortly after. iLo rocks. The rails suck.
Coming from working entirely with IBM and their nice new snap-in rails, I find this deplorable on anything but the cheapest box. It really got me off to bad start, even if everything else went great after. HP, fix your rails. Thanks.
